Giving Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members a voice
When Carter G. Woodson started the forerunner of Black History Month in the US, he may have found it hard to imagine that people of different colours and races would be in politics at senior levels. Yet while progress has been made, it has not been as fast as we would like. There remains a lack of representation of people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds in all sectors, particularly at senior levels.
So as we mark Black History Month we should take this opportunity to recognise the achievements of black and ethnic minority people in all walks of life, from music and business to politics and science. Our diversity is a strength, we must do all we can to encourage people from all backgrounds to achieve their potential in our society.
I am delighted to add my support to Black History Month.
